Lockdown: C'garh CM writes to PM, demands Rs 30k cr package

Raipur, Apr 21 () Chhattisgarh Chief MinisterBhupesh Baghel on Tuesday requested Prime Minister NarendraModi to provide financial assistance of Rs 30,000 crore to thestate in the next three months to operate relief and welfareschemes.

A state government release said Baghel also soughtexemption for functioning of electronic items and vehicleshowrooms, sweet shops, and construction activities in citiesduring the lockdown for the coronavirus outbreak.

"In a letter to the Prime Minister, Baghel said due tothe long period of lockdown, economic activities have come tostandstill and revenue collections declined to almost zero inthe state. In view of the current scenario, there is alsopossibility of a big reduction in the amount that the statereceives from Central taxes," the release said.

The state government needs additional resources toensure livelihood of 56 lakh poor families, who have no meansof income left, it said.

"The state should be given financial assistance of atleast Rs 30,000 crore from the Centre in the next threemonths, out of which Rs 10,000 crore should be releasedimmediately, so that industry, business, service andagriculture sectors can be provided monetary aid," Baghelwrote in the letter.

"Exemption should be given to the operation of sweetsshops, so that dairy farmers can sell milk there. Operation ofshowrooms of vehicles, registration of sale and purchase ofproperties, construction work in cities, outlets of airconditioners, coolers and fridges in view of summer season andall repairing works should also be allowed," it said.

It would be appropriate to allow retail works in alldistricts identified as green zones during the lockdown, theCM said in the letter. TKPBNM BNM
