Lockdown: 57 migrants on way to hometowns on bicycles booked

Mumbai, Apr 30 () A case has been registeredagainst 57 migrants labourers who set off for their hometownshundreds of kilometres away on bicycles from Navi Mumbai, inviolation of the lockdown imposed to curb the spread ofcoronavirus, a police official said on Thursday.

The police also registered a case against three shopowners who sold bicycles to these migrants during thelockdown, he said.

Some Turbhe police personnel on patrolling dutyspotted a group of people on bicycles near Mahape in NaviMumbai in the early hours of Wednesday.

When enquired, the migrants told the police that theyset off from Turbhe and other neighbouring areas of NaviMumbai to go to their native places in Uttar Pradesh, Biharand Jharkhand, as they did not have any food or means tosustain their livelihood, the official said.

They also told the police that they purchased bicyclesfrom three shops in Turbhe and nearby areas.

The 57 migrant workers were subsequently taken toTurbhe police station and booked under Indian Penal CodeSection 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by publicservant), the official said.

Their bicycles were seized and the three shop ownerswho sold them the two-wheelers were also booked under IPCSection 188, he said.

The workers were later asked to go back to their homesin Navi Mumbai and they were also provided sufficient food andgrains, senior police inspector Sachin Rane said.

"We told them to stay at home till the lockdown islifted and assured to provide food to them during thisperiod," he added. DCGK GK
