Janmashtami is also known as Krishnashtami and Gokulashtami. This is an annual festival for the Hindus to celebrate the birth anniversary of Krishna, the eighth incarnation of Lord Vishnu.
In the Hindu calendar, Janmashtami is marked on the eighth day (Ashtami) of the dark lunar fortnight (Krishnapaksha) in the month of August – September (Shravana or Bhadrapad). Janmashtami is a very important festival for the Vaishnavites worshipping Lord Vishnu or Narayana.
Janmashtami is celebrated in diverse ways throughout India. People organise a special puja (prayer) in their homes on Janmashtami day. Lord Krishna was born during midnight and hence puja to the Lord around this time is a popular tradition.
People buy a new idol of Lord Krishna, give a holy bath to it and decorate it in several ways while performing the puja. The popular items offered to Krishna on this day are butter, curd, milk, sweets and other traditional dishes.
Janmashtami is also celebrated with a huge fanfare in Krishna and Vishnu temples with special pujas, recitation of Bhagavata Purana, Bhagavad Gita and Vishnu Sahasranama.
