Kejriwal wants Army to control Delhi violence as police are ‘unable’ to

• Delhi chief minister Kejriwal wrote to MHA after Delhi violence turned fierce.

• NSA Ajit Doval and the cabinet committee will also hold a meeting to discuss the violence in the national capital.

As the violence rapidly spreads across Delhi, the chief minister believes that the police is unable to bring the mob situation back to normal. He wrote to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), amid the riots, clashes and other violence in the national capital. The riots have so far, killed 20 people and injured more than 180 people.

Kejriwal yesterday (Feb 25) after a meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah, said the police were doing its job and no additional support was needed. However, after looking at the situation this morning (Feb 26), Kejriwal reached out to MHA to call in the Army and impose curfew as despite all the efforts the police have failed to control the situation, he claimed.

“I have been in touch with a large number of people the whole night. The situation is alarming. Police, despite all its efforts, unable to control situation and instil confidence

Army shud (should) be called in and curfew imposed in rest of affected areas immediately. I am writing to Hon’ble HM to this effect,” he tweeted.


Yesterday, Amit Shah chaired a meeting with Kejriwal and other key political figures seeking their advice on the matter. After the meeting, Kejriwal said that Shah assured “all help” needed to control the situation.

The Alumni Association of Jamia Millia Islamia and Jamia Coordination Committee organised a demonstration outside Kejriwal’s residence, today, seeking action against the rioters responsible for staging the violence in New Delhi. The protestors were also calling out for the restoration of peace in the city.

They demanded that Kejriwal should personally visit affected areas with local MLAs and organise peace marches to de-escalate tensions. The protestors also urged him to inform citizens about the steps taken by the government to ease the situation.

Shah and the Cabinet Committee will also hold a meeting with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval to discuss the violence, today. Doval will brief the committee of the situation in the areas affected. Doval visited Seelampur, Jaffrabad, Maujpur and Gokulpuri Chowk areas affected by the violence to take stock of the law and order situation.
