Indian PM Narendra Modi, President Kovind and other MPs to take 30% salary cut for 12 months

  • The salaries of Prime Minister, members of Parliament will be cut by 30% for the whole year, says Union Cabinet Minister Prakash Javadekar.
  • Moreover, the government also decided to suspend Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme for the next two years.
  • The move came after the President, Vice President, and Governors of States voluntarily decided to take a pay cut.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Ram Nath Kovind along with all the members of the Indian parliament and cabinet ministers will be taking a 30% salary cut for at least 12 months due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“There will be a 30% cut in the salaries of the Prime Minister, members of Parliament for the whole year of parliament,” says Union Cabinet Minister Prakash Javadekar.


The move came after the President, Vice President, and Governors of states voluntarily decided to take a pay cut. The money will go to the Consolidated Fund of India.

Moreover, the government also decided to suspend Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme for the next two years. An estimated ₹7,900 crore from the MPLADS scheme will be diverted to Consolidated Fund of India.

Before this, government officials in Maharashtra decided to cut upto 60% salaries of elected representatives including the chief minister, ministers and MLAs for March.

The Telangana government also announced upto 75% pay cut for its officials on March 31 in the view of coronavirus.
