India reports 6,566 new coronavirus cases on May 28— tally inches towards 160,000 mark, with 43.75% recovery rate

• The total count of COVID-19 infections in India jumped to 1,58,333 on Thursday (May 28).
• Of the total cases, at least 86,110 are active cases, and 4,531 people lost their lives.
• A total of 67,691 people have recovered, taking the recovery rate to 42.75%.
• Maharashtra the worst-hit Indian state accounts for 35.96% of the total number of cases in the country.

With 6,566 new cases and 194 new deaths, the total count of COVID-19 infections in India jumped to 1,58,333 on Thursday (May 28), according to the Health Ministry data.

This is the second-highest number of deaths reported in 24 hours— earlier on May 5, India reported 195 deaths in a day.

Of the total cases, at least 86,110 are active cases, and 4,531 people lost their lives while a total of 67,691 people have recovered taking the recovery rate to 42.75%. The death rate hovers at 2.86%, which was 2.85% on Wednesday.

India continues to maintain the plateau of over 6,500 cases per day since the ease of the lockdown.

Maharashtra continues to be the worst-hit Indian state with the highest number of total cases — 56,948 — which is 35.96% of the total number of cases in the country, followed by Tamil Nadu with 18,545 cases and Delhi with 15,257 cases. The national capital surpassed Gujarat's total cases which was the third worst-hit state till now. The state of Gujarat reported 15,195 cases.

The infection is witnessing a surge in Bihar (3,061) and Uttar Pradesh (6,991) mostly due to the migrant exodus from urban areas to rural one in these states. According to ICMR, a total of 33,62,136 samples have been tested so far and 1,19,976 samples in a day.

Agra now has 875 coronavirus cases as commercial activities resume

Though officially the lockdown-4 continues till May 31, shopkeepers in mandis and bazaars of Agra, have geared up to resume commercial activities as soon as they get a green signal from the administration.

Early Thursday, the street markets were buzzing with activity as more people stirred out of their homes, of course with masks and helmets. Factories outside the municipal limits have already started, with a reduced number of workers.

People are expecting public parks to open up in a day or two. In Lucknow, permission for this has already been given. The Covid-19 tally in the Taj city now stands at 875, with five new cases till late Wednesday evening.

Haryana makes 14-day quarantine mandatory for foreign returnees

The Haryana government has directed all deputy commissioners to ensure that international travellers arriving in the state will remain in institutional quarantine for the first seven days and then home quarantine for the next similar days.

Giving details, an official spokesperson said if there is no adequate home quarantine facility, the deputy commissioner concerned, in consultation with the Chief Medical Officer, may retain that passenger for seven days more at the institutional quarantine facility.

As per the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare guidelines, all travellers would give an undertaking that they would undergo mandatory quarantine for 14 days — seven days paid institutional quarantine and seven days of isolation at home with self-monitoring of health.

Karnataka COVID-19 tally swells as people return from Maharashtra

As many as 84% or 114 of the 135 new coronavirus cases reported in the past 24 hours in Karnataka were of Maharashtra returnees, even as the state's tally rose to 2,418, an official said on Wednesday.

"New cases reported from Tuesday 5 p.m. to Wednesday 5 p.m., 135," said a health official.

The total cases with domestic travel history were 123 of the 135 cases. COVID cases spiked in Uttara Kannada, Dakshina Kannada, Yadgir, Bidar, Raichur, Bengaluru Urban, Davangere, Kalaburagi, Hassan, Belagavi and Udupi.

Of the total cases, 1,588 are active, while 781 patients have been discharged. Fourteen patients are currently admitted in ICU.

Assam's coronavirus tally rises to 774

With the return of thousands of natives from elsewhere in India, the spread of Covid-19 continued unabated in Assam, with its total climbing up to 774 cases, half of which are in two districts - Kamrup Metro and Golaghat, officials said on Wednesday.

While Assam registered 177 positive cases in the past 24 hours, the surge of Covid-19 also continued in other northeastern states - Manipur, Tripura, Meghalaya and Nagaland, as thousands of people returned to their home states from southern and western India.

Health officials in Guwahati said that of the 774 coronavirus positive cases found so far in Assam, Kamrup Metro and Golaghat recorded 246 and 143, respectively.

While Assam's main city and commercial hub Guwahati falls in Kamrup Metro, Golaghat district is a major tea growing area, and part of the famous Kaziranga National Park falls in the district.

Gujarat's tally crosses 15,000, death toll 938

The total number of corona positive cases crossed over 15,000 mark in Gujarat as 376 fresh cases were added on Wednesday— taking the total to 15,205.

The major contribution came from Ahmedabad, which also crossed the 11,000-mark with 11,097. Coronavirus claimed 23 lives in the state on Wednesday, taking the total death toll to 938. A total of 410 patients were discharged after being treated in different hospitals on Wednesday.

Ahmedabad was followed by Surat (34), Vadodara (29), Mahisagar (14), Valsad (10), Surendranagar (6), Gandhinagar (5), Navsari (4), Rajkot (3), Anand, Patan, Kutch and other states with (2 each) and Bhavnagar, Mahesana, Panchmahals, Botad, Chotta Udepur, Porbandar and Amreli ( one each).
