India has 1 million active coronavirus cases — with nearly half of them in Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh

India’s active COVID-19 cases tally, on September 17, crossed one million-mark after it added 97,894 new infections in a day. This is the highest number of coronavirus cases any country has ever added in 24 hours.

Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh are the three worst-hit COVID-19 states in India, which account for nearly half the number of active cases. These three states combined have 483,316 active infections.


In the last 24 hours, Maharashtra added 23,365 new coronavirus and reported 474 deaths due to COVID-19. Mumbai alone reported 2,378 new coronavirus cases. Whereas, Andhra Pradesh reported 8,835 new infections in a day — pushing its COVID-19 tally to 5.92 lakh. Karnataka reported 3,571 new infections in the last 24 hours.

India’s total coronavirus cases have crossed the grim 51 lakh mark, while the death toll climbed to 83,198 with the virus claiming 1,132 lives in a span of 24 hours, the data updated at 8 am showed.

The total recoveries surged to 40,25,079 while the active cases of COVID-19 crossed 10 lakh for the first time. The COVID-19 case fatality rate due to the coronavirus infection was recorded at 1.63%.
