Independence Day 2024: Theme, history, PM Modi's address and guest list
India is all set to celebrate its 78th Independence Day on August 15. This marks the anniversary of the nation's liberation from colonial rule, a victory achieved on August 15, 1947, after nearly two centuries of British domination and a prolonged struggle for freedom.

The first official Independence Day celebration occurred in 1948, marking the one-year anniversary of India's freedom. Each year, the nation looks back on its post-independence journey, honouring both its accomplishments and the rich cultural diversity that shapes India. The day also serves as a time to recognise the progress the country has made over the years.

Theme of Independence Day 2024

This year’s Independence Day theme is ‘Viksit Bharat,’ meaning ‘Developed India.’ It reflects the Indian government’s goal to make the country a developed nation by 2047, which will mark 100 years of independence.

Following tradition, the Independence Day celebrations will take place at the historic Red Fort in Delhi, where the Prime Minister will hoist the national flag and give a speech. This year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is serving his third term, will deliver his 11th consecutive speech on this special day, making him the only Prime Minister after Jawaharlal Nehru to do so.

History

India gained independence from British rule on August 15, 1947. On the eve of this historic moment, Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of independent India, famously called it a ‘Tryst with Destiny.’

India's fight for independence officially began with the ‘Revolt of 1857.’ The movement gained momentum under Mahatma Gandhi's leadership in the early 20th century. The Indian Independence Bill was introduced in the British House of Commons on July 4, 1947, and since then, India has celebrated Independence Day on August 15 every year.
