The first families day was celebrated in 1993, when the United Nations passed a resolution to encourage improved living standards around the world. In 1994, it officially declared it as the International Day of Families to recognise the change in social structure. Later, a conference was held in Beijing and Copenhagen to propose the world wide initiatives to ensure family welfare.

The United Nations says they will celebrate the 2020 International Day of Families online. This year’s theme for International Families day 2020 us Families in Development. The United Nations wants to project the meaning and significance of families in a pandemic. According to the UN, families together can develop society by developing social laws and norms.

“As the world struggles to respond to the COVID-19 crisis, there is a real opportunity to rethink and transform the way our economies and societies function to foster greater equality for all. In doing so, gender equality will not be achievable without gender equalities in families, and that on this, and so much else, the Beijing Platform for Action continues to provide a visionary roadmap of where we need to go,” said UN.
