The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) will file a Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) intervention application in the SC. Indian High commissioner for UNHRC informed New Delhi.

"The Citizenship Amendment Act is an internal matter of India and concerns the sovereign right of the Indian Parliament to make laws. We strongly believe that no foreign party has any locus standi on issues pertaining to India’s sovereignty," said Raveesh Kumar, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson.

The ministry, in its statement, added that, "we are clear that the CAA is constitutionally valid and complies with all requirements of our constitutional values. It is reflective of our long standing national commitment in respect of human rights issues arising from the tragedy of the Partition of India."

The UNHRC is a United Nations human rights body headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland. The organization addresses and investigates breaches of human rights in UN member states. India is also a part of 193 sovereign states of the UN.

The recent clashes in north-east Delhi over the CAA claimed lives of 47 people and left almost 250 injured. It sparked after the Indian parliament passed the Citizenship Amendment Act.
