A 24-year-old factory worker from Bahadurgarh, Haryana, has undergone a successful hand reimplantation surgery at Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital after his right hand was severed in a workplace accident, ANI reports. The surgery, which lasted nine hours, was performed by a team of plastic and orthopaedic surgeons at the hospital.

The incident occurred on September 28 when the worker's hand was completely amputated by a laser woodcutting machine. Displaying presence of mind, the worker collected his severed hand and sought immediate medical attention. After receiving initial treatment at a local hospital, he was referred to RML Hospital, where he was transferred to the Department of Plastic Surgery.

A team led by Prof. Dr. Mukesh Sharma, along with senior residents and orthopaedic surgeons, successfully reattached the hand using advanced microvascular techniques. The procedure involved meticulous work to reconnect the bones, tendons, arteries, veins, and nerves. The patient was kept in intensive care for three days and is now in stable condition.

According to hospital authorities, the success of the surgery was due to the coordinated efforts of the surgical team, OT nursing staff, and paramedical workers, along with support from the blood bank and laboratory services.

Dr. Sameek Bhattacharya, Director Professor and Head of Plastic Surgery, talked about the importance of timing in such cases. "If the amputated part is brought to the hospital within six hours, there is a significantly higher chance of successful replantation," he told ANI. He also provided instructions for handling severed limbs, noting that they should be cleaned, wrapped in moistened gauze, placed in an airtight bag, and stored in an icebox.

Prof. Dr. Ajay Shukla, Director and Medical Superintendent of the hospital, praised the team’s efforts, saying, "We are committed to providing high-end surgical care to all, ensuring that critical cases like this can be treated effectively."

The patient is expected to undergo a period of rehabilitation as part of his recovery process.
