Govt to impose fine for not updating Aadhar information by Sep 14 — here’s how you can do it from home in 10 min

Business Insider India
The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has set a September 14, 2024 deadline for Aadhaar cardholders to update their information, particularly Proof of Identity (POI) and Proof of Address (POA) documents. The update is free until this date, after which a ₹50 fee will be charged for any updates. This initiative is part of a broader government push to ensure the accuracy and security of the Aadhaar database, a critical tool for accessing government services, banking, and more.

Why are we updating Aadhar information?

The government requires citizens to update their Aadhaar information every 10 years under the Aadhaar Enrolment and Update Regulations, 2016. This is especially important for ensuring that all demographic and identity details, including names and addresses, remain current. Over time, as people change residences or legal names, outdated information could hinder their ability to access services such as banking, mobile connections, tax filings, and social welfare schemes.
Inaccurate or outdated information can cause delays and errors in government processes, creating bottlenecks in the delivery of subsidies and welfare benefits like the Public Distribution System (PDS) and Direct Benefit Transfers (DBT). The UIDAI emphasises that regular updates help reduce fraud and ensure the integrity of the Aadhaar database.

How to update your Aadhaar

Updating your Aadhaar online is a simple process that ensures your data remains accurate. Follow these steps to update your information before the deadline:

  1. Visit the UIDAI official website here.
  2. Log in using your 12-digit Aadhaar number and the OTP sent to your registered mobile number. Select the appropriate language.
  3. Review your details, such as your address or other personal information, and decide if an update is needed.
  4. Select the document type for the POI or POA you want to update.
  5. Upload scanned copies of the relevant documents in JPEG, PNG, or PDF format (file size must be under 2MB).
  6. Submit your update request and keep the Service Request Number (SRN) for tracking.
For updates involving biometrics, name, mobile number, or photograph, you will need to visit a UIDAI-authorised Aadhaar Enrolment Center. You can locate a nearby centre on the UIDAI website. There might be some nominal charges for updates of specific types.

Once the deadline passes, the ₹50 fee will be applicable for each update. It is advised to take advantage of the free update service to avoid future complications or extra costs. Don't miss the opportunity to update your Aadhaar before the September 14, 2024 deadline to avoid fines and ensure continued access to essential services.
