Goa renews demand for mining resumption amid COVID-19 crisis

Panaji, Apr 27 () Anticipating an economic distressdue to the coronavirus-induced lockdown in Goa, Chief MinisterPramod Sawant has sought intervention of the Centre inresumption of the mining operations, which came to a halt in2018 following the supreme court order.

The CM told reporters that he had written to theCentre to amend the Mines and Minerals (Development andRegulation) Act.

"I will also personally follow up the matter with theCentre by explaining the importance of mining activity for theconomic revival of the state," he said on Monday.

The state government had earlier filed a reviewpetition before the top court.

"Since the SC is having summer vacation, thepossibility of the matter coming up for hearing is less. Weare waiting for the Centre to provide the solution," he said. RPS
