The world’s largest producer of condoms – Malaysia’s Karex Bhd, has said that it now has stock that will last only two months as its factories have shut down due to lockdown.

Reuters reported that the company has not produced even a single condom from three of its factories in Malaysia as the country has shut down due to the coronavirus pandemic.

India, along with Thailand and China, are the other major condom producing countries and all three countries have been affected by the coronavirus. While China was the epicenter of the pandemic, India now has over 900 coronavirus cases.

Chief Executive Goh Miah Kiat of Karex told Reuters that the demand for condoms continues to grow as people stay at home but don’t want to have children because of the uncertainty all around.

He also added that in some countries the shortage can go up to months.

The company produces one in every five condoms in the world.

In India, condom sales saw a huge uptick as the lockdown was announced. According to reports, pharmacy owners said that the demand for condoms is at an all-time high – with some reporting a 25-30% increase in sales in just one week.

“People usually prefer buying a pack of three, but in the last week most of them have purchased packs of 10 and 20,” a shop owner told HT.

Meanwhile, reports also say that the sale of sex toys has also grown in India, as Indians take ‘Quarantine & chill’ quite seriously.
