Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Friday rolled out the ‘Delhi Electric Vehicle Policy’, under which his government will waive the registration fee and road tax, and provide an incentive of up to ₹1.5 lakh for electric vehicles (EV) in the national capital. The benefits offered to new EV buyers will be applicable over and above the central government’s existing scheme.

Under the policy, the Delhi government has included various benefits for new EV buyers, which are as follows:
Electric vehicle segmentIncentives offered under Delhi’s EV Policy
Two-wheelers ₹30,000
Autos ₹30,000
E-rickshaws ₹30,000
Cars₹1.5 lakh

“After launching this policy, we expect five lakh new electric vehicles in the next five years... The Delhi government will set up a dedicated ‘EV Cell’ to implement ‘electric vehicle policy,” Kejriwal added.

The Delhi government aims to generate employment to boost the economy and reduce pollution levels in the national capital. It has also set an ambitious target - aims for electric vehicles to make up for 25% of the registered vehicles by 2024. The current share of electric vehicles in new registrations stands at mere 0.2%.

The Delhi government will also provide a ‘scrapping incentive’ under the electric vehicle policy, for those consumers who wish to replace their old vehicles with electric ones.
