Devastating pictures show how Cyclone Nisarga wreaked havoc in Alibaug, Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra

• Cyclone Nisarga made landfall at 12:30 pm near Alibaug in Maharashtra — just 140 kilometers away from Mumbai.

Cyclone Nisarga hit Mumbai and neighbouring areas on June 3 with wind speeds of up to 120 kilometres per hour (kmph) after tens of thousands of people in its path were evacuated, trains rescheduled, flights cancelled, fishermen ordered out of the seas and rescue workers were put on standby.



Nisarga blew in from the Arabian Sea, making landfall at the coastal town Alibaug at around 12:30 pm. Officials expect the cyclone to blow over by 4:00 pm.



Nisarga, which is also expected to pummel the coastline of Gujarat after it’s done with Maharashtra, comes a week after Cyclone Amphan wreaked havoc in West Bengal and Odisha.

According to India Meteorological Department Chief KS Hosalikar Mumbai, Thane, Raigad and Palghar were hit with winds of more than 100 kmph. The IMD forecasts that the storm may plummet out winds of up to 120 kmph as it continues. The strong winds were accompanied by heavy to very heavy rainfall in the coastal districts of the state.

• As predicted, cyclone Nisarga caused major damage to thatched houses and unattached metal sheets among other property damage.
  

• Several kutcha houses, trees, electric poles in Alibaug, Roha in Raigad, and Mumbai fell down as they could not withstand the speed of the storm.
  

• Cyclone Nisarga even blew away an entire rooftop of a building in Karjat Raigad district of Maharashtra two and half hours after it made landfall.

• In Ghatkopar, Mumbai, Cyclone Nisarga brought strong winds with speeds between 100 to 110 kmph.
  

• As many as 40,000 people living near the sea coast in Mumbai were shifted to a safer place. Whereas, about 1,500 citizens in Alibaug in Raigad district were evacuated.
  

• It also snapped mobile network services in south Alibaug a few minutes after it landed.

• Over 37 trees have reportedly fallen in Mumbai in the last 24 hours.

• A horrifying video posted by the chairman of RPG enterprise Harsh Goenka shows the destruction caused by Cyclone Nisarga.

• Parts of Vasai Virar region in Mumbai also witnessed a power cut an hour after cyclone NIsarga approached land. No untoward incident has been reported along the southern coast of Gujarat so far. However, local authorities have issued an alert.
