COVID-19: TN gives nod for treatment at home for people with mild symptoms

Chennai, May 5 () The Tamil Nadu government hasapproved a proposal for treating people who test positive forcoronavirus at their respective residences if they have verymild symptoms and issued separate guidelines for it.

It has been decided to accept a proposal of theDirector of Public Health and Preventive Medicine for homeisolation of those who test positive and have "very mild"symptoms or are "pre-symptomatic," a Government Order (GO)said.

For treatment at home, the person diagnosed forCOVID-19 should be "clinically assigned as a very mild case /pre-symptomatic case by the treating medical officer," the GOsaid.

Such people should have requisite facility at theirresidence for self-isolation and also for quarantining thefamily contacts.

Availability of a well-ventilated single-roompreferably with an attached or separate toilet and theavailability of a care giver all the time are among theeligibility norms prescribed by the government.

"A communication link between the caregiver andhospital is a prerequisite for the entire duration of homeisolation."

The care giver and all close contacts of such patientsshould take Hydroxychloroquine as a prophylaxis besidespreparations including multivitamins as per protocol and asprescribed by the treating medical officer.

Immediate medical attention must be sought if serioussigns or symptoms develop including persistent cough,pain/pressure in the chest, continuous fever, difficulty inbreathing, mental confusion, seizures and decreased urineoutput.

All suspected (awaiting test results) and confirmedcases of COVID-19are currently being isolated and managed ina hospital setting.

Also, authorities have said that facilities likecolleges and others that are designated as 'Covid carecentres,'are set to be used forasymptomatic people who testpositive for the contagion.

Several people who have tested positive for the virushere and in other parts of Tamil Nadu have very mild or nosymptoms. VGN SS
