Although the daily tally of COVID-19 cases in India is declining, some states are witnessing a spike in cases again. This comes at the time when the cases of new subvariant of Omicron — XE variant — are being reported in some parts of the world.

India also reported its first case of XE variant in Gujarat a few days after a 67-year-old man from Mumbai tested positive for COVID-19 during his visit to Vadodara.

Union Secretary Rajesh Bhushan, in a press statement, also directed the states, where cases are spiking again, to take necessary actions to curb the spread of the virus. “It is essential that the state must maintain a strict watch and take pre-emptive action if required in any areas of concern to control any emerging spread of infection. Testing and surveillance still remain important to track the virus, its spread and evolution," Bhushan said.

He also advised the states to follow five-fold strategy — test-track-treat-vaccination and adherence to COVID appropriate behaviour with continued focus on monitoring clusters of new cases, required containment efforts for curbing the spread of infection, adequate testing, and undertake required steps in areas reporting high case positivity.
