With a record high of 5,611 new coronavirus cases in a day, India’s total count of COVID-19 infections jumped to 106,750, the Union Health Ministry data revealed on Wednesday (May 20).

According to the Health Ministry, of the total, 61,149 are active cases while at least 42,297 people have been cured of the disease.

At least 140 deaths were reported in the last 24 hours, taking the total fatality count to 3,303.

India’s coronavirus tally has easily outstripped that of China, where the disease emerged early this year.

India’s new cases tally has risen by an average of more than 4,500 cases a day over the past week, according to the Health Ministry data.

In Maharashtra, the Covid-19 cases climbed to 37,136, followed by Gujarat which has 12,140 cases and Tamil Nadu 12,448 cases so far. National capital’s tally crossed the 10,000-mark on Tuesday (May 19) and stood at 10,554.

  • Maharashtra records a new high of coronavirus deaths, over 2,000 new cases in a day
Maharashtra on Tuesday (May 19) recorded 76 Covid-19 deaths — the highest single-day surge — and 2,127 new cases, officials said.

This amounts to a staggering three deaths every hour and around 89 new cases every hour. The state has been recording more than 2,000 new patients consecutively since the past three days.

With 76 fatalities - up by 13 from the previous high of 63 notched on May 17 — the state death toll now stands at 1,325. The total number of coronavirus patients increased from 35,058 on Monday to 37,136, with 26,164 active cases.

Of the total 76 deaths, 43 were recorded in Mumbai alone - the highest till date on a single-day - taking the city’s toll to 800 now, and the number of Covid-19 positive patients here shot up by 1,411 cases, again a new record - to touch 22,746 today.

  • Gujarat’s total COVID cases cross 12000-mark, toll rises over 700
Gujarat’s total corona tally crossed the 12,000 mark on Tuesday(May 19) as 395 fresh cases took the number to 12,141, while 25 more deaths took the death toll to 719.

As the nation enters the fourth phase of lockdown, where many relaxations have been given to restore economic activity, the newfound freedom resulted in a large number of people moving around in various parts of the state, becoming a reason of worry as the number of cases detected everyday refuses to come down.

Although the percentage of Ahmedabad cases — which was over 70% of total state cases came down to 66.32% with 262 cases reported on Tuesday (May 19), a cause for concern was that 133 cases sprang up across many different parts of the state, outside the three major cities of Ahmedabad, Surat and Vadodara.

On Tuesday (May 19), 21 cases were found in Kutch district, where the disease was unseen until now.

  • Assam sees 54% rise in COVID-19 cases in the last 48 hours
With two deaths, Assam registered a 54% increase in COVID-19 positive cases in the past 48 hours raising the state’s tally to 154, Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Tuesday (May 19).

According to the latest tweet from Sarma, the positive cases rose to 154 late Tuesday evening with active cases at 107 and four deaths, including two casualties in the past 48 hours. Of the new cases reported in the past 48 hours, the highest number of 27 people tested positive in Guwahati while remaining are in 10 other districts.

Out of the 154 positive cases found so far in Assam, 41 people have been discharged from hospitals after they recovered from the disease and two cases migrated to other states.

  • 149 new cases take Karnataka Covid-19 tally to 1,395
Three people succumbed to Covid-19 in Karnataka and 149 new positive cases, the highest single-day rise, have raised the state’s tally to 1,395, according to an official, here on Tuesday.

“A 61-year-old male patient, resident of Ballari, died on Tuesday at a designated hospital. He had tested positive for Covid-19,” the health official said.

The deceased had a travel history to Bengaluru, suffered from Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI) and was also a known case of IHD with recent cardiac surgery. It was Karnataka’s 38th Covid-19 death and Ballari’s first.

  • Chhattisgarh reports five more Covid-19 cases
Chhattisgarh on Tuesday reported five more Covid-19 cases, taking the tally of active cases in the state to 41. Four of the new cases were reported from Rajnandgaon, while Korba reported one case.

The State Control and Command Centre for Covid-19 said in a statement that the process was on to admit the patients to the Medical College Hospital in Rajnandgaon and the Bilaspur COVID Hospital.

Chhattisgarh in recent days has been witnessing a sudden spike in the number of positive cases. As many as 25 persons tested positive for Covid-19 on Sunday (May 17), followed by three more on Monday (May 18).
