Chennai, Jun 4 () Coronavirus cases continued to surge in Tamil Nadu which recorded on Thursday the biggest single day spike of 1,384 cases and 12 deaths taking the infection tally to 27,256 and toll to 220.
After two airport employees -one on Wednesday and another today- tested positive for the virus, the Chennai Airport's "operational offices" have been closed effective today till Sunday, an official said.
To a question, the official told that the closure will, however, not have any impact on the routine functioning of the airport.
Of the new cases today, Chennai alone accounted for 1,072 which is the highest single day increase for the state capital, pushing the case count here to 18,693, a health department bulletin said.
Also, 16,447 samples were tested today which again is the highest number of specimens examined in a single day in Tamil Nadu and totally 5,44,981 samples have been tested so far.
This is the fifth successive day the state has reported 1,000 plus cases.
It saw an addition of 1,286 cases on June 3, 1,091 on Tuesday, 1,162 on Monday and 1,149 on Sunday.
While 585 people were discharged from various hospitals, 14,901 have recovered till date and active cases stood at 12,132.
Of the newly infected, 10 were returnees from other states and one person was from Kuwait.
Six women, a girl and and five men succumbed to the virus. Those dead included a 17-year-old girl with diabetes, a 33-year-old woman who was a postnatal mother and a 25-year-old woman with bronchial asthma, the government said.
As many as 1,740 returnees to Tamil Nadu through various modes of transport, including train, bus and by flight, have tested positive. VGN COR BN WELCOME BN WELCOME
