Coronavirus cases in India crosses 6300 mark; Maharashtra remains the worst-hit with 1135 cases

The total tally of novel coronavirus cases in India reached up to 6,373 on Thursday, according to the data by the Union Health Ministry.

As per the ministry, of the total number, 5,734 are active cases, 166 are dead, one has migrated, while 473 people have been discharged after recovery.

Lav Agarwal, Joint Secretary Union Health Ministry during the Wednesday(April 8) evening briefing, said that 773 coronavirus cases and 32 deaths have been recorded since Tuesday (April 7).

Maharashtra remained the worst-hit state with the highest number of cases, 1135. Tamil Nadu has 738 cases, Delhi has reported 669 cases.

In Kerala, there are 345 cases, while in Telangana, there are 427 cases, and Andhra Pradesh reported 348 cases.

Madhya Pradesh has 229, Uttar Pradesh has 361 and Rajasthan has 381 as of Wednesday evening.

In the North-East, Assam has the most number of cases — 27. Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram and Tripura have one each while Manipur has 2.

4th COVID-19 death in J&K, positive cases surge to 159

A 65-year old woman died yesterday of coronavirus infection as the death toll rose to four in J&K.

Doctors said a 65-year old woman belonging to Udhampur district was admitted to the government medical college hospital in Jammu after she complained of breathlessness and chest pain.

This is the first COVID-19 death in J&K and the first in the Jammu division. Doctors said the body of the deceased would be handed over after completing the formalities laid down by the protocol.

With this, the number of positive cases has risen to 159 in J&K.

Yesterday (April 8), J&K recorded the highest number of positive cases in a single day as 34 new cases surfaced.

CM orders sealing of COVID-19 hotspots in MP

Hotspots of coronavirus outbreak —Indore, Bhopal and Ujjain —should be completely sealed to check the spread of infection from and to these towns, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan directed the officers during a review meeting.

During the review meeting on Wednesday (April 8), he said the district administration should ensure the supply of essential commodities and FIRs should be filed against those who are withholding information about infection.

"Case should be registered against those who are hiding the travel history or about infection. Action can be taken after the treatment. Apart from this, stern action should be taken against people misbehaving with those engaged in the fight against COVID-19," he said.

In possibly the biggest jump over 24 hours, Madhya Pradesh recorded 72 fresh cases of coronavirus cases sending the total spiralling to 229.

1,300 Tablighis from Karnataka attended Nizamuddin meet: CM

About 1,300 members of the Tablighi Jamaat from Karnataka attended a congregation at their centre (Markaz) in New Delhi's Nizamuddin in March, said state Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa on Wednesday (April 8).

"Of the 1,300 Tablighi attendees, 276 were from Bengaluru, and 482 from 29 districts across the state have been identified and quarantined, while efforts are on to trace the remaining 542," said Chief Minister in a series of tweets in Kannada and English.

Of about 500 of them who were tested for coronavirus so far, only 30 tested positive and the remaining negative.

Though the 6-day congregation was held from March 13-18 in the national capital's southeast suburb, many Tablighis from the southern state had been to the mosque since March 1 and some returned by March 24 before trains were stopped for the 21-day lockdown since March 25.

Not wearing a mask is a punishable offence in Delhi, even in cars

The Delhi government on Wednesday announced that face masks would be compulsory for anyone stepping out of their house, including while travelling in personal or official vehicles.

The decision was taken after a meeting of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal with the Health Department.

"Wearing of facial masks can reduce the spread of coronavirus substantially. Therefore, it has been decided that facial masks will be compulsory for anyone stepping out of their house. Cloth masks shall be eligible too," the Chief Minister tweeted.

In an order, issued on Wednesday (April 8), the District Disaster Management Authority, said the violation of the order would be punishable.

12 containment zones in Hyderabad to check COVID-19

Municipal authorities in Greater Hyderabad have set up 12 containment clusters to contain the spread of COVID-19.

Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has set up the clusters in Ramgopalpet, Sheikhpet, Red Hills, Malakpet-Santoshnagar, Chandrayangutta, Alwal, Moosapet, Kukatpally, Quthbullapur-Gajularamaram, Mayurinagar, Yousufguda and Chandanagar.

GHMC Commissioner DS Lokesh Kumar said GHMC officials and staff were working in coordination with the Police, Revenue and Health Departments.

The containment clusters were formed after 89 Covid-19 positive cases were registered in these areas. He said special attention was given to sanitation and spraying of disinfectant in these clusters.

Andhra Pradesh building COVID-19 warrior force as tally touches 348

The number of COVID-19 cases in Andhra Pradesh rose to 348 as the day drew to a close on Wednesday (April 8). The evening media bulletin issued by the state nodal officer noted that 19 new cases were detected through the tests conducted between 9 am and 6 pm on Wednesday (April 8).

The highest number of cases -- eight - was reported from Guntur district, followed by seven in Anantapur, three in Prakasam, and one in West Godavari.

Despite no new cases being reported in the latest batch of tests, Kurnool district continues to lead with 75 cases, followed by Guntur at 49 and Nellore at 48.

The nodal officer also reported that three COVID-19 patients have recovered and were discharged from different hospitals on Wednesday. Those discharged on Wednesday included a 49-year old female patient, a 25-year old male and a 51-year old male.
