Coronavirus hits box office — 83 release may be delayed and Sooryavanshi struggles

Bollywood is set to receive a huge setback due to coronavirus. The release of major films like Akshay Kumar's Sooryavanshi and Ranveer Singh-starrer 83 might be delayed from their predetermined dates of March 24 and April 10, respectively.

While Hollywood producers have already rescheduled their big budget movies like James Bond’s No Time to Die, Bollywood producers are still assessing the impact. However, a delay in release seems imminent as Delhi also closed cinema halls today March 12 after Kerala did the same.

According to Business Standard, as much as ₹500 crore of box office business is at risk.

The trailer launch of Kabir Khan’s 83 has already been delayed and there are rumours that release may also be postponed. Sooryavanshi’s director Rohit Shetty along with other film producers are in talks to change the release dates.

“No decision taken yet. We are talking daily but as of now, things stand as is- that is the films will release on their original dates. If at all we need to look at a change, we will do so closer to the delivery,” Reliance Entertainment Group CEO, Shibasish Sarkar told Spotboye..

Ormax Media projects Sooryavanshi’s opening day earnings at ₹30.8 crore. Had it been a normal day, it would make as much as ₹36 crore. After Kerala shut its cinemas, there are rumours that they would be closed down across the country.

The shooting of many movies has also come to a standstill. Salman Khan’s Radhe, set to release in May is also hit as its Thailand and Azerbaijan schedules are cancelled. Baaghi 3, released on March 6, has already suffered due to coronavirus fears across the country. The movie was expected to earn ₹200 crore in all. However, trade analysts have lowered the expectations to ₹160 crore now, and has earned ₹76.94 crore as of now.
