India records 3,722 new coronavirus cases in last 24 hours — tally inches towards 78,000-mark

With 3,722 new cases, the coronavirus tally in India crossed the 78,000-mark on Thursday (May 14), according to the Union Health Ministry data.

Of the total 78,003 cases, 49,219 are active while 26,234 people have recovered, and 2,549 are dead.

Maharashtra remains the worst-hit state with the total number of cases rising to 25,922, followed by Gujarat which reported 9,267 cases and Delhi with 7,998 cases.

There are a total of 9,227 cases reported in Tamil Nadu. Madhya Pradesh has reported 4,173 while Rajasthan has 4,328 cases so far. A total of 3,729 cases have been reported in Uttar Pradesh.


States and union territories (UTs) which have reported less than ten active cases so far are Arunachal Pradesh, Dadar Nagar Haveli, Manipur, Mizoram and Puducherry.

  • 37 new cases take Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) Covid-19 tally to 971
Coronavirus cases tally in J&K climbed to 971 after 37 more people tested positive on Wednesday (May 13).

One person died of Covid-19, taking the toll to 11. The death was reported from the Jammu division. Of the 37 new cases, seven belonged to the Jammu, and 30 to Kashmir, said the Information and Public Relations Department. 466 people have recovered from the disease.

The number of active cases in J&K is now 494. Of this, 38 are in the Jammu division, and 456 in the Kashmir division.

  • Delhi court judges self-quarantine after coming in contact with Corona patient
Two district court judges in the national capital have put themselves under quarantine after one of them came in contact with a COVID-19 patient during the hearing.

A Metropolitan Magistrate posted at a central district court came in contact with a patient after he appeared before him for recording a statement on May 6.

Pursuant to this, his wife, employed as Metropolitan Magistrate in Saket court, has isolated herself for 14 days at home, stated a circular issued by the court's District and Sessions Judge Neena Bansal Krishna.

  • Seven tests positive in rapid PCR tests in Goa
Seven persons, including six members of a family who had travelled to Goa from Mumbai and a truck driver from Gujarat, has preliminarily tested positive for Covid-19 in the initial round of rapid tests, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said on Wednesday.

He said that all the seven cases were "imported" and there was no fear of community transmission in Goa. Sawant added that the second round of confirmatory tests of samples drawn from all seven persons was underway.

"Today, six persons from a Goan family living in Mumbai, who had arrived in Goa by car, tested positive in their rapid PCR tests. They were already in our quarantine centre. We have sent samples for confirmatory tests at the Goa Medical College. If the confirmatory tests are positive, we will send all six of them to the COVID hospital," he said, adding the family had not contacted any person and had driven straight from the state's road border to the quarantine centre, as per mandated norms.

  • Maharashtra touch new records of Covid-19 deaths
Maharashtra on Wednesday (May 13) reported a new high of 54 Covid-19 deaths, while Mumbai accounted for a record 40 fatalities and the number of positive cases across the state achieved a new single-day spike of 1,495, health officials said.

With 54 fatalities - up from Tuesday's 53 - the state's death toll shot up to 975 and the total number of coronavirus patients increased to 25,922, with the highest jump seen after the 1,278 new cases on May 10.

Of the total deaths, a staggering 40 - the highest till date - were recorded in Mumbai alone, taking the city's toll to 596 and the number of Covid-19 patients in the city shot up by a new high of 800 to touch 15,747.

Mumbai's Dharavi slum alone continued to be a major hotspot and a headache for the health authorities, notching 66 new cases, taking the total number of patients to 1,028, and 40 deaths till now.

  • Three dead, Tamil Nadu Covid-19 tally inches towards 10,000 mark
Tamil Nadu reported 509 new coronavirus cases and three deaths over the past 24 hours, according to the state Health Department.

In a statement issued, the department said three Covid-19 patients died taking the total death toll to 64. As many as 509 persons tested positive for coronavirus, including five who had returned from overseas, in Tamil Nadu taking the total tally to 9,227.

A total of nine persons out of 927 persons who flew into Chennai by Air India Express between May 9 and May 12 have tested positive.

Incidentally, 21 districts have not reported any coronavirus positive case on Wednesday (May 13). The number of Covid-19 patients who were cured and discharged on Wednesday was 42, and the total is 2,176.
