Coronavirus cases in India climb to 31,332— with Maharashtra and Delhi seeing a continuous rise

The total number of Covid-19 cases in the country climbed to 31,332 on Wednesday, according to the Union Health Ministry data. Of the total cases, 22,629 are active, 7,695 people have recovered, and 1007 people have succumbed to the disease.

Maharashtra remained the worst-hit state with the total number of cases rising to 9,318, with 400 deaths and 1,388 people recovering from the deadly virus. Gujarat was the next which has reported 3,744 cases so far followed by Delhi, which has reported 3,314 cases, according to the Health Ministry data.

The other states which have seen a sharp rise in cases are Madhya Pradesh (2,387), Rajasthan (2,364), Tamil Nadu (2,058) and Uttar Pradesh (2,053).

States which have reported less than 10 cases are Tripura, Mizoram, Puducherry, Manipur, Goa and Arunachal Pradesh.


Stranded in Mumbai, sixty seafarers return to Goa

Sixty stranded seafarers who were onboard cruise ship Marella Discovery reached Goa from Mumbai late on Tuesday and have been quarantined to a city hotel in Panaji for 14 days.

"There were sixty-six seafarers in all. Sixty arrived in Goa by two separate buses late on Tuesday night. The six others, who have also tested negative will be joining the rest soon," a government spokesperson said.

All the sixty seafarers have been quarantined in a budget hotel in Panaji's Patto area, where they are expected to spend 14 days in quarantine.

There are around 120 more seafarers of Goan origin, who are stranded in Mumbai and who would be ferried to Goa in the coming days after their coronavirus tests are carried out by the authorities in Maharashtra.

Indore sees big jump of 94 COVID-19 cases

Indore registered a big rise of 94 corona positive cases in the late evening bulletin on Tuesday as the number of infected people increased to 2,387 in Madhya Pradesh.

The death toll from COVID-19 increased to 120 on Wednesday. Nine persons have died due to coronavirus infection in the state during the last 24 hours. These include three in Ujjain, two in Indore and one each in Bhopal, Raisen, Dewas and Ashoknagar.

So far, 65 deaths have been reported from the epidemic of coronavirus in Indore alone, while 20 in Ujjain, 13 in Bhopal, seven in Dewas, six in Khargone, two each in Hoshangabad and Mandsaur. Chhindwara, Jabalpur, Agar Malwa, Dhar, Raisen, Ashoknagar and Khandwa each recorded one death.

Jabalpur which had recovered to get into the green zone with fewer cases was back in the Red zone. That could mean an extension of lockdown beyond May 3.

Four districts of the state, Burhanpur, Ashoknagar, Shahdol and Rewa recorded their first cases spreading the virus to 31 of 52 districts in the state on Tuesday.

Delhi's COVID-19 cases tally stands at 3,314; sees 201 recoveries, highest in a day

The total number of COVID-19 cases in Delhi rose to 3,314 on Tuesday, even as 201 coronavirus patients recovered from the disease, the highest so far in a day with no fatalities, authorities said.

No death was reported for the third consecutive day in the national capital. Among the 3,314 cases includes a Delhi Police constable attached to the crime branch.

The constable had visited the Tablighi Jamaat religious congregation in Nizamuddin, which had last month become the epicentre of the COVID-19 spread. Fifteen members of the crime branch team, who came in touch with the constable, have been advised home quarantine.

So far, 1,078 COVID-19 patients have recovered, and there are 2,182 active cases in Delhi.

The number of containment zones in the city reached 100. To curb the COVID-19 spread, Delhi Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal directed all district magistrates to implement a "micro-containment zone strategy" in their respective areas.

Seven new COVID-19 cases in Odisha, the total rises to 118

Seven more people, including two women, tested positive for coronavirus in Odisha on Tuesday, taking the total number of cases in the state to 118, officials said.

Of the seven cases, four were reported from the western district of Sundergarh and three from Bhadrak, they said.

With these fresh ones, the number of active cases in the state increased to 79, the health department officials said.

The total cases in the coastal district of Bhadrak have gone up to 19 while in Sundergarh it is 10, an official said.

According to the Bhadrak district administration, all three cases have links to West Bengal. Two persons from Basudevpur and one from the Bont block tested positive for the virus, but they had "no symptoms of COVID-19".

Corona control room set up in UP Assembly

A special control room has been set up in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly to provide a platform to the MLAs to register their suggestions and complaints related to the state government's fight against COVID-19.

Assembly Speaker Hriday Narayan Dixit said that the decision to this effect was taken on the advice of Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla during his last video conference with the presiding officers of the State Assemblies.

Similar control rooms have also been set up in other State Assemblies.

The Speaker said that Legislators would be encouraged to highlight problems being faced by them in their constituencies while discharging duties as people's representatives.

"Suggestions by MLAs would also enable the government to strengthen its fight against the coronavirus infection," he added.

Maha see a new high of Covid-19 deaths in a single day; cases cross 9,318

Maharashtra on Tuesday recorded its highest number of Covid-19 deaths — 31 in a single day, eclipsing the 27 notched on Monday, health officials said.

The state also recorded a massive 729 new patients, taking the total of infected persons from 8,590 to 9,318.

With a large number of fatalities, the state toll touched 400, up from 369 on Monday.

Of the deaths, 25 were recorded in Mumbai, the city's highest ever, taking its toll from 219 to 244, while the number of Covid-19 positive patients in the city shot up from 5,776 to 6,169 - with 393 new cases.

Dharavi gave a fresh shock with the number of positive cases shooting up from 288 to 330 and 19 deaths till date. Pune recorded two fresh fatalities, while Jalgaon notched four deaths.

Among the 31 dead, there were 16 men and 15 women, and nearly two-thirds of them suffered from other serious ailments such as diabetes, hypertension, heart problems and asthma.
