Congress president Sonia Gandhi asks Amit Shah to quit over Delhi violence

• Congress Interim president Sonia Gandhi held a press conference on Wednesday afternoon regarding the Delhi violence.
• Gandhi called for the resignation of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and also blamed the Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for not being able to take action.
• For three days now, India’s national capital has been the centre of violence and communal clashes. The death toll has reached 21 in Delhi.

Indian National Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi held a rare press conference on Wednesday (February 26) over the Delhi violence. She was accompanied by former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

Gandhi called for the resignation of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and also blamed the Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for not being able to take action.

“There is a conspiracy behind the violence, the country also saw this during Delhi elections. Many BJP leaders made inciting comments creating an atmosphere of fear and hatred. The Centre and the Union Home Minister is responsible for the present situation in Delhi. The Union Home Minister should resign,” she said.

She also lamented over the fact that there are no all-party meets are held in a situation as tense as this. Meanwhile, Delhi CM Kejriwal said that the Home Minister has assured all help.

"This is Delhi's issue and all political parties will work towards ensuring that peace prevails in the national capital. The Home Minister has assured of every possible help," said Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal, after meeting Amit Shah and other political parties representatives at the Home Ministry yesterday.

For three days now, India’s national capital has been the centre of violence and communal clashes, with mobs running wild on the streets and Muslim-majority areas under attack. Localities like Chand Bagh, Bhajanpura, Maujpur-Babarpur, and Jaffrabad are witnessing the most violence.

Currently, as many as 20 people have died as mobs attacked each other with guns, petrol bombs, stones and iron rods. Over 170 have been brought injured to GTB Hospital, and fire services and ambulances are running back and forth all over the city for two days now.

All of North-eastern Delhi remains tense as Section 144 was imposed in the areas of Maujpur, Kardampuri, Chand Bagh and Dayalpur.areas on Monday.

The violence was reportedly triggered by a clash between two sets of people— one protesting against the new citizenship law and the other campaigning in support of the legislation that has already been passed by the Parliament.
