Significance of Diwali

Diwali, also known as Deepawali, holds immense cultural and spiritual significance in Hinduism and other Indian religions. It symbolises the triumph of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and good over evil. Diwali commemorates the return of Lord Ram to Ayodhya after 14 years of exile, during which he defeated the demon king Ravan. The people of Ayodhya welcomed him by lighting oil lamps, or diyas, symbolizing the victory of righteousness. This theme of illumination extends to the celebration itself, where homes, temples, and public spaces are adorned with lights, and people perform rituals and prayers to invite prosperity and harmony.

The festival also emphasises the worship of Goddess Lakshmi, the deity of wealth and prosperity, along with Lord Ganesha, who removes obstacles and brings blessings. On Diwali, families come together to perform Lakshmi Puja, offering prayers for health, wealth, and happiness in the coming year. The festival encourages acts of kindness, charity, and community bonding, as families exchange gifts, prepare sweets, and decorate their homes to welcome both deities and loved ones. Beyond religious rituals, Diwali has become a symbol of unity and joy, celebrated across India and by Indian communities worldwide.
