COVID-19: Students should leave hostels in Bengaluru if their institutions declare a holiday, says BBMP

Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has issued, late night on Monday, an advisory for students who are residing in hostels and as paying guests to vacate the place and leave the city, if their respective institutions declare a holiday.


According to the municipal body’s advisory, overcrowding in rooms is “strictly prohibited”. It also orders that a living space of 110 square feet, excluding kitchen and bathroom, shall not include more than two occupants till the pandemic subsides.

BBMP also clarified that no one will be forced to move out of their accommodations and will be given adequate time to arrange an alternative. If a student wishes to stay in his/her accommodation, they should take precautionary and hygienic measures as per the Karnataka government guidelines.

The advisory further warned the owners and managers of the hostels that strict action will be taken if there is an outbreak in hostels and paying guest accommodations, and advised to maintain hygiene inside the facilities.

Bengaluru City Police Commissioner and Additional District Magistrate have issued orders to extend section 144 in Bengaluru city till June 21. Bengaluru Urban recorded 1,470 new COVID-19 cases and 12 fatalities in the last 24 hours, pushing the overall tally to 11,98,158 positive cases and 15,319 deaths, so far.
