A research team in Canada has claimed to have isolated coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) which is responsible for the spread of COVID-19. An Indian researcher Dr Arinjay Banerjee is also a part of the team of researchers from Sunnybrook, McMaster University and the University of Toronto.

The other researchers in the team are Dr. Robert Kozak and Dr. Samira Mubareka.

According to reports, isolation of the virus will help researchers work on its testing and treatment.

“Now that we have isolated the SARS-CoV-2 virus, we can share this with other researchers and continue this teamwork. The more viruses that are made available in this way, the more we can learn, collaborate and share,” said Dr Banerjee.

Dr Banerjee is a postdoctoral research fellow at McMaster University, Canada. His chosen field is ‘understanding host-pathogen interactions and the emergence of novel pathogens from wildlife’.

The report also said that the isolation of the virus will also help the researchers understand its biology, evolution and clinical shedding.

This development comes in as a crucial step in the fight against the pandemic. Currently, there are 134,768 positive cases from all around the world, and 4,983 have died from it.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has quarantined himself as his wife Sophie tested positive for COVID-19.

In India too, the number of cases continue to rise and now stands at a total of 77, with one death. A Google employee in Bengaluru is among the latest to have been tested positive for the virus.
