India to approach UN to ban JeM chief and 11 other terrorists

Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) commander Abdul Rauf Ashgar is one of the 12 terrorists that India wants to be banned by the United Nations.

India will be urging the global body to ban these fugitives belonging to JeM, Indian Mujahideen (IM) and Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT), because of their involvement in the terror attacks that shook the country in the past.

Ashgar (42), who is the younger brother of JeM chief Maulana Masood Azhar, is suspected to have planned the recent attack at Pathankot air base, which killed 1 civilian and 7 security personnel along with 6 terrorists. Some other names from the list are: IM commander Riyaz Bhatkal, Ansar-ut-Tawahid chief AS Armar, his brother Mohammad Shafi Armar, and Azamgarh resident Mohammad Sajid.

This ban will restrict the movement of these suspects as they won’t be able to freely travel, their assets would be frozen, and financial penalties would be imposed on them, an official told ET.

As per ET sources, the final approval for the list would be given by Home minister Rajnath Singh and it would then be communicated to the UN through the external affairs ministry.

Even though some intelligence agencies say that Sultan and Sajid died in Syria, there exists a a red corner notice by the Interpol, claiming that they are very much alive and active.
