E-tailers have proved to be the biggest market place for smartphones in India. According to IDC, online share of smartphones increased to 31.6 per cent due to strong performance by key online players primarily from China-based vendors. And Xiaomi seems to have aced the online market place. According to IDC’s recent data, Xiaomi is now in the top five vendors in India. The Chinese smartphone maker has a very strong online presence in India, which explains their growth in numbers and sales. While Lenovo Group continues to lead online channel, it is followed by Xiaomi. “Lenovo Group accounts for almost one-fourth of total online smartphone shipments driven primarily by Lenovo’s K5 series and Motorola’s G4 series models. Also, Xiaomi’s Redmi Note 3 and newly launched Redmi 3S fuelled the online shipments to a large extent,” according to Karthik J, Senior Market Analyst, Client Devices, IDC India.
Xiaomi has seen its shipments doubled over previous quarter, and according to IDC has a 7.4 per cent market share in India, while Micromax which slipped to number three has a 7.5 per cent share. In the second quarter, Xiaomi had already become the third largest smartphone vendor across the top 30 cities in India.
According to IDC, Xiaomi had 8.1 per cent share in these top thirty cities, just below Samsung and Micromax. Interestingly IDC’s India Monthly Smartphone Tracker for June 2016 showed the Redmi Note 3 is the highest-shipped smartphone for online platform in India in any given quarter. Xiaomi claims to have sold around 1.75 million units of Redmi Note 3 in just five months.
