Up until now, the annual fees of IITs were Rs 90,000, but this academic session would see the fees surging thrice to Rs 3 lakh a year, because of a recommendation of the Standing Committee of the IIT Council (SCIC). The final decision is yet to be taken by Human Resources Development Minister Smriti Irani, who is also the chairperson of the IIT Council. The last time IITs saw an increase in their fee was in 2013, when from Rs 50000, it had gone to Rs 90,000 a year.
Not only this, the recommendations from IIT SCIC also include a National Aptitude Test in 2017 so that students can be screened before the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE).

However, it’s not like the fee hike would be the sole problem of students and their families, as a comprehensive student loan system is also proposed to come into effect.

IIT SCIC has recommended this hike on the basis of a report of the Committee of IIT Directors that was set up in October 2015. This committee has suggested this hike so that the entire cost of salary and maintenance for promising projects, research infrastructure and space maximization on campus can be covered.
