Former Indian cricket captain MS Dhoni’s wicket keeping gloves have stirred a huge debate. Dhoni, who holds the honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Indian Army, decided to pay tribute to the army by wearing an insignia on his gloves during the India vs South Africa match.

However, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has told the Board of Control for Cricket in India to have the insignia removed from Dhoni’s gloves.

“It is against the regulations and we have requested it is removed,” Claire Furlong, ICC General Manager – Strategic Communications told PTI.

Dhoni, on his gloves, was wearing the regimental dagger insignia of the Para Special Forces.

The ICC’s decision to remove the gloves has become a point of argument on Indian social media. Indian fans who had first praised the cricketer for showing his love for the Indian army at the international sports platform, then went on to support him and protested against the ICC’s decision.

However, some have spoken up about respecting the rules of the game. Indian footballer Baichung Bhutia too has reportedly said that Dhoni should remove the gloves to respect the rules and regulations.

The BCCI though has reached out to support Dhoni and will reportedly appeal to the ICC to let the cricketer keep the gloves for the World Cup matches.
