HRD Ministry will now come up with domestic ranking of Indian institutions

The HRD ministry led by Smriti Irani is busy in preparing a framework to rank India’s higher education institutions.

This India-Centric Ranking Framework will give an alternative to Indian students, who often compare rankings of global colleges with India’s. Usually, Indian institutions are ranked below 200.

The country specific rankings will cover all institutes offering courses on engineering, law, management and humanities.

The ranking list is expected to come out in January-February 2016.

The ministry had even held consultations with QS and Times ranking authorities to look at how to improve the rankings.

National Board of Accreditation Chairman (NBA) Surendra Prasad said, “We submitted the draft to the HRD ministry and they may or may not accept it. It was done at the behest of the HRD ministry and they alone can decide on the ranking framework.”

Meanwhile, academic institutes will be assessed on parameters like teaching-learning; research; collaborative practice and professional performance; graduate outcomes; placements; outreach and inclusive action and peer group perception.

One of the important parameters is outreach and inclusive action, which will assess institutes on affirmative action and steps taken to reach out students from disadvantaged sections of society.

Moreover, the rankings will be driven through a web-based portal wherein each institute will be able to furnish information.
