It's easy to restart an Xbox One from the console or the controller.

  • You can restart an Xbox One if you want to fix any bugs or glitches with the console.
  • There are multiple ways to run a power off and on cycle on an Xbox One, including a forced manual shutdown.
  • Restarting or powering an Xbox One off will not erase games or saved data, so don't be afraid to restart the console when it isn't working properly.

Even an Xbox One, one of the most advanced gaming consoles yet developed, can experience its fair share of glitches.

If your Xbox is running too slowly, having response or connectivity issues, or is experiencing any other bugs, usually the best thing to do is just turn it off and then back on again.

Running a power cycle that restarts an Xbox One will also reset the software, usually clearing out any glitches that were affecting game play.

Shutting the system down is also a good idea at the end of any gaming session even if the system is running error free, as it saves power and allows the console to rest.

How to shut down an Xbox One

If you want to fully shut down your Xbox One, or if the above restart procedures aren't working (especially if the system seems frozen) then a full shut down will work better.

Start with a physical on and off power cycle, and if that does not resolve the issues, repeat it, this time also fully disconnecting the power supply.

1. Press and hold the Xbox button on the front of the console for 10 seconds until the system shuts down.

2. Wait a moment, then power it back on using either the Xbox button on the console or on a controller.

If problems persist, perform the same manual shutdown as depicted above, but this time disconnect the system's power cable once it is turned off. Do not reconnect the cable for at least 10 seconds, as this will allow for a more complete reset.
