Here’s everything you need to know about linking your Aadhaar with PAN

In case you are eligible to obtain an Aadhaar number, you would need to quote your Aadhaar number when you apply for a permanent account number (PAN) and in your income tax return from July onwards.
As per the government, Aadhaar-enabled biometric identification will ensure that nobody can obtain multiple PANs; it would also help the government in keeping an eye on tax evaders.
Even if your income is below the tax limit and you are not required to file returns, you would need to link your PAN and Aadhaar number. In case that’s not done, your PAN will be liable to become invalid from a date that the government would soon announce, as per section 139AA of the Act.
However, the recent order from Supreme Court is a relief for people who possess a PAN but do not have an Aadhaar and have not even applied for one.
In order to ease the process of linking PAN and Aadhaar, the IT department has announced the process on its e-filing portal. You can visit the income tax e-filing portal at https://incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in/ and enter your user id and password so that you can access your profile. If you don’t have a profile there, you can register on the portal by entering basic registration details such as PAN, name and date of birth.
After logging in, go to the "Profile Settings" tab and click on ‘Link Aadhaar’ in the drop down menu. This would open a new form where you’d need to enter your name, date of birth, gender as per PAN records, your Aadhaar number and your name as per Aadhaar records. After submitting these details and entering the text in the captcha code, a success message would be displayed confirming the linking of Aadhaar with PAN.
You would also receive a confirmation email on your registered ID.
In case the name in Aadhaar does not exactly match with the name on PAN, you would need to validate the same using an Aadhaar OTP or EVC.
