How To Get That Perfect Selfie In 7 Steps
Feb 24, 2014, 11:31 IST
Priyanka takes it, SRK is obsessed with it – yes, it’s the selfie we are talking about. Aren’t they fun? You don’t have to depend on anyone else to click your snapshot when you can do it on your own. Don’t you simply love clicking selfies? Well, you are not alone. The selfie fever is at an all-time high just now. Some might tag is as show-off, but who cares! The only thing you may not like about clicking selfies is that clicking a selfie is not a cakewalk. Those bug-eyed and duck-faced portraits with arms protruding are a definite no-no. So, if you want to click a fabulous selfie, follow these 7 simple steps.
1. Take a look at yourself.
Although you can delete a selfie if you don’t like it and click another, what’s the harm in taking a thorough look at yourself in the mirror before you go click-click! Photos have a tendency to shrink your hair. So pumping up the volume of your tresses, especially on the top and at the sides, is very important. After all, you don’t want a flat image.
2. Light it right.
Good lighting triggers great quality photographs and it becomes doubly important when you are clicking a selfie. After all, there’s no light assistant here. Remember, back lighting is the biggest enemy of a selfie and nothing works better than the daylight. Diffused daylight (find a shade so that you are not in direct sunlight) will make your skin appear smoother and won’t cast dark shadows either. You can’t show what you want to show if the lighting is not suitable.
3. What’s at the back?
This might seem like unnecessary details but just imagine an elegantly dressed person standing in front of a pile of dirty laundry and towels. Not an impressive sight, eh? Check your surroundings first before clicking a selfie. Solid-coloured walls, curtains or a clean background are the things that you can zero in on.
4. Don’t move.
Yes, this is the trickiest part. With so many things to take care of – light, angle, looks and a wobbly arm stretched out to the max (you don’t want to look like a pumpkin in a close-up) – it’s really tough to remain still. Still, it is of utmost importance if you want a good snapshot. Don’t worry, though. Practice makes a selfie perfect; so keep your calm and carry on.
5. Identify your angle.
Learn this – very few people’s faces look beautiful at all angles. As a general rule, tilting your face a little will give you a much better selfie than a straight face. You can find your ‘best’ angle by spending a few minutes in front of the mirror.
6. Edit it.
Editing a picture is not a crime! Nor does it mean you are trying to hide a facial flaw. On the other hand, using a filter for some kind of special effect or cropping the unwanted stuff will make your selfie look even more appealing. So go ahead and play around with the multitude of photo-editing apps.
Forget those celeb-like pouts and duck faces. You’ll be only ruining your selfie by imitating someone else. Just be natural and be yourself. Smile, look at the camera and start clicking. You can also try looking away from the camera and check if it looks flattering. The bottom line – there’s no specific rule for clicking a selfie. What works well for someone else, might make you look ridiculous. Experimenting is the key!
