A policeman has been shot during an ongoing hostage situation at a supermarket in southern France.

AFP reported the injury, citing security sources.

Regional regional police confirmed that incident is underway at the Super U supermarket in Trèbes, near the town of Carcassonne.

The French interior ministry also confirmed that a major operation was underway.

According to the French TV channel BFMTV, a man entered the supermarket on Friday morning and shots were heard soon after.

BFMTV reported that the attack is linked to an earlier shooting in Carcassonne itself.

It reported that a member of the CRS, the reserve branch of the French National Police, was shoot near his or her barracks by a man driving in a car.

AFP tweeted that ISIS has claimed responsibility for the attack.
