Admirers of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who completes one month in office today (June 24), would say he has made a grand start. He has not shied away from biting the bullet on tough decisions needed to revive the country’s economy. For his critics, however, much of this is old wine in a new bottle with only cosmetic changes.
Given the hope and euphoria surrounding Modi’s ascent to power, the new government’s first 30 days have been under scrutiny. His promise of achhe din (better days) instilled the hope of a better life among the masses.
Modi started with a bang by inviting the leaders of SAARC nations in his swearing-in ceremony and thus showing his desire to focus on foreign policy and build bridges with the neighbours.
From speaking of inclusive, accountable governance to allowing a free hand to bureaucrats, many of his moves have resonated well with the people who were tired of scandals and indecisiveness of the previous UPA government.

However, the real challenge for the Modi government will be reviving investment, creating jobs and curbing inflation. The prospects look bleak, given the forecast of weak monsoon and the Iraq crisis, which is driving up fuel prices.
By raising railway fares, the government has signalled that the journey to achhe din will involve going through some bure din or tough days.
