"He's just like he is on TV," Hunter said on Friday. "He's an asshole, but he's our asshole."
The account was corroborated by four people at the Riverside County Young Republicans meeting at a sports bar, The Tribune reported. Hunter was also joined by Rep. Ken Calvert of California for the event.
Hunter reportedly covered his mouth as he spoke: "He put his hand near his mouth like when you are going to whisper something," said Jose Guzman, one of the attendees.
"And he goes, 'By the way, all the stories you hear about him, they're true. Except the fake news," Guzman said, referring to Hunter.
Many of the attendees supported Hunter's assessment, said Whitney Walsh, another attendee.
"Very much. They were fine with that answer," Walsh said.
Hunter is described as one of Trump's earlier supporters, endorsing then-candidate Trump without having met or spoken to him, according to The Tribune.
