The big fight amongst small cars just got hotter. Nissan's low-cost brand Datsun is launching its Redi Go in India on April 14th, 2016, and it’s rearing to take the much celebrated Renault Kwid head on.
After the failure of its entry-level GO and GO+, Datsun India is betting big on its next major offering, the Redi GO. The car was first showcased as a concept at the 2014 Auto Expo. The production version will be launched this April.
There really couldn’t be a better time for Datsun to launch the Redi Go, as the rugged looking small car can ride the current craze for SUV-ish looking affordable sub 4 meter passenger vehicles.
When showcased for the first time, the Redi-GO was much appreciated for its brawny and urban styling. Hope Datsun retains most of the product design in the final production version. The spy shots would have us believe just that.
Under the hood, the Redi GO is expected to get a 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol engine that would come mated to a 5 speed manual transmission. The engine is expected to churn out 64 BHP of power and 140 Nm of torque.
The car will be based on the same low-cost platform as the Renault Kwid. However, it isn’t clear if the company will go for the same level of equipment as its French cousin.
The Kwid was the first one to offer unbelievable features like the touch-screen infotainment system and voice navigation in the entry-level segment, overtaking the Hyundai Eon as the favorite in the entry-level segment.
The Redi-GO will be manufactured at the Renault-Nissan alliance plant at Oragadam in Tamil Nadu, and will be exported to several lucrative markets like South Africa.
Datsun has promised to price the Redi GO aggressively, undercutting the Renault Kwid by a significant margin. We’ll have to wait and watch how much of that claim is true.
