The Nifty opened with a modest uptick on Tuesday as traders covered a part of their short positions during the expiry week as the index saw its first tick of green following three days of relentless selling across the globe. All 18 sectors, apart from telecom, saw strong upticks.

It remains to be seen if this upthrust is able to maintain itself by the end of this day.

The Nifty was up 8 points at 7,816, after hitting a high of 7,921. Yes Bank, Hindalco, Tata Steel, Axis Bank and UltraTech were the top five gainers on the Index, while NTPC, NMDC, Dr. Reddy's Hero Motor and Tata Power continued to inch lower. The Advance-Decline Ratio was 38/12 in early deals. Reliance Industries was the most active counter on the NSE followed by Axis Bank and the State Bank of India. All three posted gains.

The Sensex was modestly higher by 74 points to 25,816 points.

Broader indices recorded modest gains. The CNX 100, CNX 200 and the CNX 500 Indices rose up to 0.7 percent in early deals. The CNX Mid Cap and the CNX Small Cap Indices were up smartly as well. The Bank Nifty added 147 points to trade at 16,878 points. But CNX PSU Bank Index and the CNX Finance Index remained in the red.

Bit gains were seen on CNX Metal, CNX Pharma and CNX IT sectorial indices.

The Advance-Decline Ratio was at 847 stocks gaining versus 858 that lost ground. It worsened from the start of trade.
