Here is a guide to what the average investor is thinking about right now

To make a trade in the markets, you (should) have to do some research first.

And knowing what people are researching lets you know how people will trade.

Or at least that's the logic of Investopedia CEO David Siegel.

Siegel's company provides an encyclopedia of investing and economic terms, along with other educational tools to help investors.

For the start of 2016, and to match up with US President Barack Obama's final State of the Union address last night, Investopedia released their 2016 "State of the Union" for the economy.

Based on analytics data of 20 million unique visits and 50 million page views, Siegel and company took what people are researching and extrapolated out key themes for 2016.

"By looking at what people are researching and educating themselves on, it gives us a picture of what they're thinking," Siegel told Business Insider.
