Here Comes Obama's Big Speech On Syria

Sep 11, 2013, 06:21 IST

APPresident Barack Obama is addressing the nation tonight about the situation in Syria from the East Room of the White House, in a speech that is widely anticipated but expected to deliver little news.

His speech comes amid rapidly evolving circumstances that have completely shifted the expected tone of his speech. When he announced it last week, it looked like he would be attempting to persuade Congress and the public to support his plan of military action.

Senior administration officials are passing around bullet points of Obama's planned speech - none of which differs from what he has said on the topic so far.

According to Reuters, he'll "explain to Americans why it is in U.S. national security interests for Syria to face consequences for chemical weapons use." And he will express skepticism about the new Russia-Syria plan to turn over Syrian chemical weapons to international control.

We'll be covering the speech, which will begin precisely at 9:01:30 p.m., live. Check back here for updates.
