Economists forecast that industrial production fell by 0.1% and capacity utilization declined to 75.3% from 75.4%, according to Bloomberg.

"In the wake of the uptick in the March ISM manufacturing survey, we think today's official production data for the same month are likely to disappoint," wrote Pantheon Macroeconomics' Ian Shepherdson in a note Friday. "Our model of the month-to-month output numbers incorporates the ISM data, but it is substantially driven by manufacturing hours worked, which fell in both February and March."

"Our relatively gloomy March forecast, though, does not change our view that the manufacturing sector is past the worst and is likely to improve gradually over the course of this year," he said.
