Economists forecast that the count fell to 278,000 last week from 282,000 in the prior period, according to Bloomberg.
This could be the 13th straight week that initial claims read below 300,000.
The latest data showed that the four-week moving average of unemployment claims rose by 5,000 to 271,500, after falling to a 15-year low the previous week.
