Three classroom buildings - The Science Center, Sever and Emerson Halls - and one dormitory, Thayer Hall, were affected, the Ivy League school said on its website.
The threat comes three days after a coordinated attack by gunmen and suicide bombers killed 127 people in Paris.
Harvard University issued the following statement at 12:52 pm EST on Monday:
As most of you are now aware, we received an unconfirmed bomb threat affecting the Science Center, as well as Sever, Emerson and Thayer Halls on the Cambridge campus. The buildings have been evacuated and law enforcement officials are on scene. Entry to the Yard is restricted. We will provide updates as soon as we have additional information.
Harvard updated the statement at 1:16 pm:
The four buildings are being searched. We expect this process will likely take several hours. We will continue to provide updates as information becomes available.
Still no word on the full situation here at Harvard. #WBZ pic.twitter.com/o15ya4499d
