A video, posted by Golden Dawn supporter Panayiotis Iliopoulos, shows the scale of the march:
According to Timur Moon of the International Business Times, the march, designed to honor three "fallen heroes" of the party, numbered around 30,000.
"Men dressed in military fatigues, baseball caps and swastikas lit torches and fired flares, chanting anti-immigration slogans," Moon writes.
The AP reports that 5,000 Golden Dawn supporters marched past the US Embassy in Athens, chanting anti-Turkish, anti-US and anti-immigrant slogans. The anti-US feeling was prompted by memories of a 1996 territorial dispute between Greece and Turkey that only ended peacefully after the intervention of the US, and led to three Greek navy officers dying in a helicopter crash.
Multiple reports suggest that the party is working hard to expand its reach at present – reportedly reaching out to German neo-Nazi groups, and working on recruiting Greek children.
