Government won’t privatize 4 Indian airports

The government has decided not to privatize Chennai, Kolkata, Jaipur and Ahmedabad airports.

Private companies would ony be employed for operation and maintenance in Jaipur and Ahmedabad airports. A decision was already taken last month in a meeting attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Civil Aviation Minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju among others.

The proposal was to hand over the operation, management and development of Chennai, Kolkata, Ahmedabad and Jaipur airports through public private partnerships (PPP). However, the government has now decided to take up Jaipur and Ahmedabad airports on pilot basis.

Deputy Aviation Minister Mahesh Sharma told reporters today, “The four airports, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Chennai and Kolkata, were under consideration. On a pilot basis, the two airports, Jaipur and Ahmedabad, will be taken on O&M basis. Issues of Chennai and Kolkata have been deferred."
