One person was found dead in the truck, on the passenger side. Police said he was of Polish nationality and appeared not to have driven the truck. Another person, who reportedly ran away from the scene, was arrested by police and is the suspected driver of the truck.
According to German Bild newspaper, the suspect taken into custody is 23 years old, of Pakistani nationality and reportedly came into Germany as a refugee in early 2016.
A wide police deployment is currently underway at the emergency shelter for refugees at the former Tempelhof airport. Around 200 police officials are reportedly present, including members of a special unit, and are searching through the shelter, according to Welt.de. The suspect was reportedly registered there.
The suspect reportedly travelled into Germany over the Balkan route and used many different names, making it hard to identify him, according to news agency dpa and Welt.de.
The truck ran into the market outside the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church in the Charlottenburg neighbourhood of Berlin, at about 8 p.m. local time on Monday.
The truck plowed through stalls and tables and travelled between 50 and 80 metres, according to the Berliner Morgenpost.
