Gavin Williamson announced as Theresa May's new defence secretary
LONDON - Theresa May's chief whip Gavin Williamson has been announced the UK government's new defence secretary.
Williamson replaces Michael Fallon, who announced his resignation on Wednesday evening after being accused in the sexual harassment scandal that has engulfed Westminster.
In his resignation letter to Prime Minister Theresa May, Fallon said his past behaviour had "fallen short" of what was expected of him. The MP for Sevenoaks this week admitted to inappropriate behaviour towards journalist Julia Hartley-Brewer more than a decade ago.
The prominent journalist claimed Fallon "repeatedly put his hand on my knee" during a dinner at Conservative party conference and she "calmly and politely explained to him that, if he did it again, I would 'punch him in the face'."
